Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a Pre-K in a low-income, high poverty area in Florida. It is a Title I school which means that almost all of the students in the school receive free or reduced price lunch. I am currently teaching math, science, language arts and social/emotional skills to a wonderful group of four and five year olds. Most of these children come from difficult home environments and lack exposure to things that we can sometimes take for granted. My students are hard working and eager to learn. They are also so grateful for new opportunities and excited for fun learning experiences. My students use a lot of hands on items to learn through play.

My Project

The block area is the favorite center of the classroom. The cardboard blocks we have now have seen better days (they are at least 10 years old). We have even had to throw some away.

A simple tried and true pastime goes a long way toward expanding young minds.

The Legos and Magnatiles are other ways (besides blocks) to let the children build and learn through play. While playing with the blocks, children use their imaginations to design and build their projects while getting hands-on experience with measuring, counting, organizing and problem solving. blocks. In addition the students will develop motor skills and hand-eye coordination, block play can also help foster creativity, enhance problem-solving ability and build other cognitive, emotional and social skills
