My Project

I have been implementing strategies from a Building Thinking Classroom training in a first-grade classroom. An instructional strategy used in building a thinking classroom is vertical standing. Students are randomly sorted into pairs and sent to wipe books hung around my classroom (thin dry-erase sheets) to solve open-ended math problems or a series of math problems that have been scaffolded to increase student challenge. I have been implementing building thinking classrooms for two and a half years now, so I'm trying to figure out the best materials to use that will last long through student use.

Vertical standing allows students to move instead of sit, increasing engagement and focus.

The whiteboard, a non-permanent surface, will be used by students to show what they're thinking, promote conversation, and collaborate when solving problems. The whiteboard will also easily allow students to have the option to add to their work or fix misconceptions about a concept. The standing whiteboards will also provide visible access to their peers' thinking. As the teacher, it will also allow me to act as a facilitator to manage classroom thinking and work by glancing around the room at their standing whiteboards. The magnetic erasers and expos will be placed on the whiteboards for easy access, and materials will be readily available. Currently, students use expos and erasers and have to grab their materials beforehand and put them away at the end of the lesson, which takes up classroom instruction time. The student whiteboards will be used for independent learning time in math and other core subjects. Students use their independent whiteboards to support their learning by writing, drawing pictures in math and reading, or during independent break times.
