My Project

In the aftermath of COVID-19, students are relearning how to think and how to work collaboratively in the mathematics classroom. Working in small groups on vertical writing surfaces provides space for students to practice these skills. Using non-permanent vertical boards allows students to solve mathematical problems without fearing failure. The ability to work with two other classmates and write on an erasable surface is very conducive to learning according to recent research. Dr. Peter Liljedahl, the author of Building Thinking Classrooms, conducted research over many years in multiple classroom settings. His book focuses on 14 teaching practices for enhancing learning. One of the major focuses of his book is grouping students by visible random grouping techniques and providing ways for students to work in groups on non-permanent vertical surfaces. These four whiteboards, markers and erasers would allow my students to work collaboratively during class in small groups. The boards will be used daily as students are randomly grouped when they walk into my classroom. A task is given to each group to solve on the vertical whiteboard spaces. Students then work collaboratively on the boards. Currently, I do not have boards available for four groups. They are working on paper which is not equitable with other groups in the room.
