This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students are part of a magnet program that places creativity, critical thinking, and empathy at the center of everything we do. Throughout their time at our school, students learn to become innovative designers, global collaborators, and knowledge constructors. As a math teacher, my goal is to make learning as student-centered as possible. This year, I am implementing practices from Peter Liljedahl's Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics. One of the key practices centers around providing vertical non-permanent surfaces (VNPSs) such as large whiteboards for students to utilize as they engage in problem solving. These VNPSs help get students up and out of their seats, talking to each other, and displaying their thinking.

By donating to our project, you can help build a math classroom that promotes more risk-taking, makes space for active learning, and fosters a stronger mathematical identity.

The easel whiteboards will be used in two math classrooms for students in grades 7 and 8. Each whiteboard will be shared between 3-4 students and will be used daily as students work through both non-curricular and curricular-thinking tasks. The large surfaces will provide a space for students to process their thinking and record their solution(s) as a group. Since we plan to use the whiteboards daily, we will also need plenty of whiteboard markers.
