Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Are you a reader? You know all the fabulous places a book can take you. You know how a good book can spark ideas and inspire hope. My students need good books like: The Fault in Our Stars, Holes, and Loser to inspire them. They need engaging reading material readily available to them.

My students are hard-working and amazing.

They speak a variety of different languages and come from homes where there is often not enough money for food, let alone books. Most of my students do not have the resources to support buying extras. Our school does not have the money to buy classroom library books either. We work hard to make sure that our students get the same experience as those students at more affluent schools. We work hard to level the playing field for these wonderful kids. I try to build their love of reading by providing fun and engaging lessons for them, as well as providing a wide variety of good reading material for them to access at anytime.

My Project

My goal this year is to foster a love for reading within my students. The novels you are providing will help do that. Children often turn away from reading and see it as just another job when they are never allowed to select their own reading material. This year my 7th graders will be reading 20 different books outside of our main curriculum. These novels will be self selected from the books provided by you! They will be able to select books like; Of Mice and Men, The Maze Runner, or The Book Thief. They will work on "book commercials" where they will advertise their reading to the rest of the class. The students will participate in independent reading of a novel of their choosing each school day. By the end of the year I hope the students will have a new perspective on reading and new hunger for books. The world of books has saved me so many times, I hope to pass this gift to my students.

I am new to my grade level this year and lack a large classroom library.

The books you provide will give my students the ability to access reading material of their own choosing at anytime. The books will provide endless hours of entertainment and joy for my students. My students will be able to build their literacy, their vocabulary, and their grammar skills all while building their love for reading.
