In a classroom full of gifted students who are eager learners, differentiating instruction while satisfying their curiosity and keeping them consistently and actively engaged can be a challenge. Fortunately technology has become a very effective tool in my class.
I teach 60 fourth and fifth grade gifted and talented students in South Carolina.
Our school's population in approximately 600, and we have close to a 70% poverty level. My students are hard working, very bright, and enthusiastic. However, we are lacking some of the resources that could give our students a richer educational experience and help prepare them for a 21st century workforce.
My students are different in a variety of ways. They have different learning styles, strengths, and weaknesses, yet they all have to be taught the same concepts. It is therefore important that my lessons are differentiated to meet the needs of each student. Technology has been invaluable in this endeavor. When I work with a small group of students on their area of weakness, the other students work in cooperative groups on iPads and computers. Unfortunately, the students must share the technology. We do not have enough iPads and computers for each student. My goal is to provide the students with splitters to allow several students to listen to a story, watch an instructional video, or complete assignments while sharing an iPad or computer. We are also in need of earphones for the students who cannot afford their own. To prevent the transfer of germs and/or lice, it is essential that each student has his/her own set of personal earphones.
Donations to this project will make a difference in the differentiated learning instruction in my classroom and individualized learning for my students.
By helping provide these essential items (splitters and earphones), my students' learning needs will be met. They will also be able to work effectively with technology, a necessary part of preparing my students for living and working in the 21st century.
