Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our class time goes by very quickly since each of our rotation centers last 15 minutes each. Since all of my students have autism and are non-verbal, I want my students to learn how to communicate their needs or wants with any multimodal form of communication.

My students are in kindergarten through second grade.

All of my students have been diagnosed with autism. They attend school in the greater Los Angeles area in a moderate - severe Autism program on a general education campus. Our school is small and houses less than 400 students. Our school is very old and lacks the appropriate furniture that my students require. Most of our desks are chipped or are not balanced. Unfortunately, our school does not have the funding to purchase new furniture.

My Project

My students are great on technology and are able to navigate any system or program. Unfortunately, my students lack the simple fine motor skills such as writing, cutting, coloring, and manipulating small objects and need a lot of modeling and hand over hand assistance in order to learn simple fine motor tasks. Teaching with the tables we have has been a difficult task it is either too big and I can't reach my students or I have to sit behind them which I feel violates personal space. I would love to have trapezoid shaped tables in order to facilitate assistance to my students when needed. With trapezoid tables I can visualize how easy it would be to put 3 or 4 desks side by side in a semi circle and I sit in front of my students. I would be able to model any task ( e.g., writing, cutting, gluing, coloring) and all of my students would be able to see me and keep focus on what I'm doing. I can also help my students write or hold a writing tool without having to put half of my body on the desk.

Having appropriate desks in my classroom will help facilitate the learning of my students' fine motor skills.

They will better understand how to do a task with a visual representation of a task ( i.e, teacher models task in front of them and at close proximity). This will eventually help my students communicate their needs or wants which is my ultimate goal for all of my students.
