My Students

I teach English learner students in grades K-5 at an elementary school on the Big Island in Hawaii. My students represent many different cultures and economic backgrounds. Most of my students are "disadvantaged" due to their economic backgrounds.

Although my students may be facing challenges in their lives, they are always eager to learn new things.

Our school has been using a state-mandated reading and math curriculum. Many of our students are struggling, especially with the reading curriculum. Our students experience difficulty relating to the stories shared in the reading curriculum because of their limited exposure to different climates and cultures. Many of our students have never left the Hawaiian islands; therefore, their personal experiences are minimal.

My Project

I work with students in grades K-5 that are learning English as their second language. This project will be used to create various literacy activities that can be used as independent work and/or used in small group reading instruction.

My goal is to help my students build a strong foundation in reading skills before the end of 2nd grade.

I want all of my students to become successful readers! The Teachers Pay Teachers gift card will be used to help me purchase ready-made phonics and writing lessons for grades K-6. The plastic boxes will be used to store sight word flashcards, magnetic letters, letter tiles, dry erase pens, dry erase erasers, and other small manipulatives used for literacy activities. The letter boards will be used for positive motivational quotes throughout our classroom and the posters will be used as learning resources for my students to refer to when needed. Thank you for helping me help my students become successful independent readers!
