My Students

First grade is an exciting year for children that is filled with lots of learning and growth! My classroom is a fun, vibrant place where children make huge gains both academically and socially throughout the year! First graders are active throughout the day and need opportunities to move and groove all day long!

My students are eager and excited to learn every day at school!

Teaching is such an exciting adventure because no two days are ever the same! The 6 and 7 year old boys and girls I teach have very diverse cultural, economic, academic, language, and emotional needs. My school is a fantastic place where the students meet every day to learn with and from one another! My students work hard every day at school to become better readers, writers, thinkers, and learners...providing the classroom resources to help them strengthen their skills provides endless benefits!

My Project

Childhood obesity is at its highest rate which leads to higher risk of many diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, hypertension and other health conditions. It's important that children have a healthy, active lifestyle in their early ages which will also benefit them as they progress through school and into adulthood.

One of our favorite activities during outside recess and also when we need to stay inside for recess during our cold North Dakota winters is building obstacle courses!

The children are very creative when building obstacle courses and generally end up using chairs, books, tables, etc. The children have requested more items to build obstacle courses that will help to strengthen their bodies and minds. They've asked for items to balance on, balls to dribble, rings to hop through, jump ropes, and also sensory items to help give their brains a break.

Children need to have many opportunities throughout the day to move their bodies, and give their brains a break. Building and participating in obstacle courses not only stimulates creativity and teamwork but gets their blood pumping and their bodies moving.

By participating in obstacle courses, children can develop a strong emotional well-being, a positive outlook on life, increased concentration and focus, and learn about teamwork while building the courses with their classmates. As their teacher, I love that they are creating their own opportunities to stay fit and healthy while problem solving with their peers. The items that the children requested will help them to build bigger and better obstacle courses all while keeping their bodies and brains physically fit!
