I serve a population of students at the Danny Kaye School in Brooklyn, where many of our students are eligible for Title 1 services. To keep our students meaningfully engaged during the lunch periods, our PTA generously purchased a variety of table games and arts materials for students to use at their tables, when the weather does not permit outdoor play. Many of these games are now beyond repair, and many pieces lost. We would like to replace some of them, and add some puzzles as well. The Danny Kaye School celebrated its 100th year last year. With a building this old, special tiles had to be placed in the ceiling to control some of the echo effects. When students are sitting idly waiting for the lunch period to be over, the noise level can be quite unbearable. We have found that if they are working on something constructive, students will create less noise. The table games have worked very well to control the amount of noise students generate, and are also used as incentives for classes that cooperate, and for special treats for class achievement. A donation of some board games and puzzles would help us in keeping our students engaged during their free time at lunch. These games will be used for both lunch periods, and would create opportunities for students to interact in a positive manner, as they enhance problem solving skills and develop other strategies.
