This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are Spanish Language learners in grades 2-5 in a Charter School. We live in different areas of the community in the Rockaways and are from a variety of social-economic backgrounds from low, middle, and upper middle social-economic background. We attend a Title 1 school, some of us commute on the A-train, some of us take the school bus, and some just walk to school! Our expectation is to learn Spanish academic language to achieve reading, writing, listening, speaking and as well learn Hispanic culture. We are 15 diverse classrooms from grades 2-5 that have all types of family ethnic backgrounds-some from the West Indies, Carribbean, Africa, India, and even Latin America! Some of us come from monolingual English speaking homes, some of us from already bilingual speaking homes. We all are eager to continue our learning to be Multilingual learners and progress forward in Spanish!

My Project

Students love learning, not studying, so to create more excitement and positivity on learning a new language we need to have fun, engaging activities and games for word play.

Spanish word study will include fun learning by using concrete manipulatives for scholars to touch, move around for building new vocabulary, word families, identifying and practicing letter and initial sound recognition, reviewing syllables, high frequency words and sight words.

Having lots of visuals for vocabulary words and topics will invite Spanish language learners to participate more by tapping into their prior knowledge in English and bridging their speaking skills from English to Spanish, helping them produce more Spanish speaking and writing skills. I want to move my scholars from just being on the receptive end of learning the language and tap into more than reading and listening modalities.

Scholars will use what they learn in group and partner work during word center activities and game time to help them build confidence to work independently during word study time. By having these concrete manipulatives available to all students, it will help them boost their confidence, cognitive memory, reading fluency, and comprehension skills during Spanish reading.
