My Students

Have you ever wanted to know about what you were supposed to already understand? My students are excited about their science activities but remain unaware of the background of science discoveries. They also struggle with nonfiction reading skills, and have too little resources to increase skill

Our school is in an urban, high poverty city.

Resources are very limited. More important most students have very little prior experiences that help them develop nonfiction reading skills and increase their science concept knowledge. Nonfiction choices of reading are limited and often boring; most of our classroom books are fiction. Time is limited to teaching science concepts and because students lack background experiences they quite often gain basic concept understandings. The weakest served students at our school are the gifted and students seeking "more" learning. We are so focused on meeting the basic needs of students, those that could benefit from enriched materials get lost in the process. Our students are supposed to all do annual science fair project; yet their understanding of what a scientist's work entails is at this point limited to me, their lab teacher's tales. They could great benefit from experiences of real, and profound scientists.

My Project

This series of books explain the history of science and the scientists in a story-like manner. It is engaging reading and comprehensible reading for youth. They make science and the work of a scientist exciting. These books will be GREAT for all students especially students who are ready to learn more and who yearn to learn more about science. The book includes many methods that will guide students in their reading; many images with captions, side notes explaining vocabulary, many smaller side stories...all to keep students engaged in reading and to help them comprehend sometimes difficult science concepts. Reading these books would produce students with increased nonfiction reading ability and give a richer grasp of science concepts. These books will also help move students to enjoy learning; reading material that is engaging and meaningful because it is written for their age.

These books are critical enrichment materials for our students.

I know they will be appreciated because students already actively check out books from my limited, small, tired science library. Your help will move student learning and help them appreciate science.
