My Students

This is my 20th year as an educator. I started my career as a special education classroom teacher and have been working as a school social worker for the past 11, and yoga teacher for the past few years. I have the honor of supporting the needs of students, families, and staff at two schools on Staten Island. My schools are high poverty schools in New York City. All of our students receive free lunch. Ninety-seven percent of our student population is Black or Latino; many are first-generation Americans. Many of my students are transitioning from homelessness and or living in temporary housing. Many of my students have experienced a traumatic event that threatened their sense of physical security. Thirty percent of our students receive Special Education services. Despite the challenges they face daily, my students are sweet, silly, creative and talented beings. As an educator that practices mindfulness and yoga,​ I know the physical and mental benefits. I teach mindfulness and yoga to my students so they learn how to pay attention to the relationship between their mind and body. The yoga program that I facilitate offers students the opportunity to build strength, flexibility, balance and mental focus.

My Project

STEM is important because it teaches critical thinking skills and instills a passion for innovation. Beyond the benefit of learning science, technology, engineering, and math, STEM assists in the problem-solving and exploratory learning that fuel success across a variety of tasks and disciplines. My students love learning through play STEM fosters that love of learning. Instilling that passion and drive to learn is at its most crucial stage during the elementary years. Lego, STEM and jewelry making kits will allow my students to use their wonderful sense of curiosity and inquisitiveness to explore their creativity while learning and having fun.
