Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Give this project a boost!
A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
I am a school Climate Specialist in a high-needs neighborhood. Our school is a diverse public high school: 38% Hispanic, 18% Black/African American, 4% Asian, 3% Pacific Islander, 7% Multiracial, 4% Native American, and 29% Caucasian.
I have amazing students who use their diversity and life experiences to their advantage.
Many of my students struggle with challenges outside of school. Many of our students are below the poverty line. Many students are in the foster care system or are homeless. Many are recent immigrants learning English as a second language. They are excited to boost create social change in our community.
They have recently come together with a list of demands to value Black lives at our school. One of their demands focuses on expanding restorative justice.
My Project
These books and tools will be used by my school Equity & Climate Team to center our work in restorative and transformative justice, as was demanded by our students. We appreciate these books, in particular, because they are straightforward and offer explicit tools to develop restorative systems and guided restorative conferencing. We hope to share some excerpts of these in staff professional development sessions. We also are excited that many of these books are authored by educators and activists of color.
In the face of a year of online learning, we are determined to look at this as an opportunity to pause and build relationships with all stakeholders at our school.
We have suffered from high turnover rates and lack of funding that has created an atmosphere that lacks trust and connection. We know that staff can better serve students when they model the kindness, empathy, compassion, and connection toward one another. We hope to use these conversation cards to start deeper and more authentic conversation between staff members. We are also excited to share some of these conversation starters for class circles and icebreakers! These Table Topic cards have empowered students with choice by allowing them to sort through cards to find a question for a circle round.
