Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Reading is very essential. If by 3rd grade, reading is not mastered, it can be detrimental for a child. I loved to read in 3rd grade and I want to instill that same love into my special needs 3rd graders. My desire is to make reading FUN and engaging for my students.

My students attend a Title I school in New York, which means that 98% of my students receive free breakfast and lunch.

My school also offers a healthy snack. Being that our school is located in a high poverty area, my students don't have the means to buy everyday school supplies but they love to learn and love to have fun doing it. I will be teaching 3rd grade special needs children whom I want to receive the same learning opportunities as everybody else. Reading is not a strength for my students so this year I am looking to build their reading stamina.

My Project

Small groups are very essential in a self-contained special needs classroom. I plan on using the Focus of Reading Learning Chart to help my students apply targeted skills and strategies to the books we are reading in class. The chart is a great visual that the students can refer back to if need be. Teaching Reading Skills Activity Centers would be used during our center/small time. In these centers the children would develop skills in language, reading foundational skills, reading informational text, reading literature, phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, comprehension, and fluency. I love this even more because the activities are Common Core aligned. The Literacy Centers Management Chart would help me organize independent literacy centers. In a special needs class, organization and structure are key to having a successful learning environment. This visual chart is great for not only the teacher but for the students as well, as they will always know where to go.

Having the visual charts in our classroom would greatly improve the student learning.

The majority of my students are visual learners and these charts will aid in their understanding. Having the reading activities in our classroom would help strengthen my students' reading. Your donations would be greatly appreciated!
