Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am currently a teacher in a low-income/high poverty elementary school located in the Bronx. I work in a classroom with students with special needs, English Language Learners and students who reside in shelters. No matter the combination of students that I may have each year, my goal is always the same: to help close the achievement gap.

Over the summer, the students tend to lose the information that was taught to them the previous year.

They often do not read or continue to practice the skills that were taught to them. This is where it becomes challenging as the achievement gap becomes larger and students find themselves trying to play catch up.

My students are creative, eager to learn, and enjoy reading for pleasure. However, many of my students do not have reading material at home or the opportunity to read once they leave school. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking forward to keeping pushing my students to rise to their excel and become proficient readers, reading at their grade level standard or above.

My Project

The students have been strongly impacted by the pandemic in many ways, especially academically. I have noticed that the students' biggest obstacle this year is reading. The books that are in my classroom are above the students' reading levels. I want to provide them with students that they can read independently, with levels ranging from A -F. I am also requesting books that will help students increase their comprehension skills. Students will also use the books to take home to read to their families. I am excited to see students become excited about reading again.
