My Students

My classroom includes a diverse population of students with wide range of abilities. Some have been identified as having a disability, while others have been identified as high ability learners.

I believe learning should be fun and memorable as my students work their way through third grade.

For this reason, I try to incorporate a variety of activities to add interest in learning and mastering the core curriculum.

I use lots of technology based learning opportunities, but also want to instill a love of books and literature in my students.

My Project

Each year we do a research and in depth writing project. Students are to choose a person from history and find out all they can about that person. I help them choose someone who speaks to their interests, but also can serve as a role model.

As they collect information about their person, I guide my students through the entire writing process to produce a five paragraph essay.

The project culminates in a "wax museum", in which students dress as their character. When their "button" is pushed, they give a short monologue about their person.

I have found the "Who Was" series extremely helpful in helping students successfully do their research independently. These books are in high demand during this time since the entire third grade is doing this project. I have some and am in particular need of strong female role models for my classroom collection. A classroom set would be extremely helpful in giving students more resources and choices.
