Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Give this project a boost!
A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
This project is being completed by Jania, an officer in the STEM Squad, an extracurricular club whose mission is to use science, engineering, math, and technology to solve problems in the world. The club is hoping to join a network of 3D printing enthusiasts around the word who are engaging in a humanitarian effort to build prosthetic hands for children who cannot afford traditional prosthetic.
This project will help a dedicated group of 120 students in the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade that want to give back to children who are less fortunate and need assistance. The club is planning to partner with E-Nable in an initiative to print prosthetic hands for children around the world who cannot afford the cost (often thousands of dollars) of these hands. This project represents my students trying to be a force for positive change in the world and I am proud to support them in this endeavor.
The project will allow students to apply the skills they are learning about 3D printing and engineering to tackle a problem that exists in the world. I am very excited to be able to help them service people that are less fortunate than themselves. This project reinforces principles that the students are learning about, and does so in a way that benefits others. This project teaches empathy and promotes humanitarian efforts.
It is an absolute honor to be able to work with such a wonderful group of students to try to tackle a global problem and working with the E-Nable group will make this project a smashing success.
In Their Own Words
My project idea is to use 3D printing in a new way. The project is to make prosthetics for kids who do not have hands. This project can help the kids hold a cup or eat on their own, something that is a big deal for those children. For many children without hands, they have been unable to be independent. Our goal is to help these kids gain their independence.
The way that we will bring this project to life is by printing the prosthetic hand pieces on the 3D printer in our makerspace. Then we will use the supplies provided by the hand kits to assemble the hands. Afterwards, we will send the hands to E-nable so that they can match it with a child in need.
This is important for my school and community because helping people that are less fortunate is very important. We want to show that there is kindness in the world and hope that these children will be able to share their happiness with those around them. Like my teacher always says, "Be the change you wish to see in the world" (Ghandi).
