My Students

We are an incredibly diverse, urban school where families struggle to keep a roof over their heads and food on the table. Our classroom is comprised of 30 students in the seventh and eighth grade who come from more than 17 countries with more than 10 different first languages spoken, and 78% of our students are entitled to free lunches. Additionally, all of my students have special needs. Despite all these challenges, my students still show up with a smile each day.

My Project

Greek and Latin prefixes, root words, and suffixes are the foundation for many words in our language. For years, I have been teaching the most commonly used word parts and have found that students learn best when they have index cards to manipulate the word parts. Storing them becomes a problem and often times, they become victim to nightly sweeping.

Individual storage boxes for weekly word work and larger in class storage boxes for reference will greatly assist my students in building a foundation for defining new vocabulary quickly.

With a simple way to store and transport their index cards, students will be able to study their words more readily and keep things organized.
