This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Our Mechanical Mustangs Robotics Team is composed of 24 students, grades 9-12, 25% female and 75% male. Almost all of our students are minorities and most of them qualify for free breakfast and lunch because of their economic status. We spend six weeks designing, building, and fabricating our 115 lb, 4 ft robot.

This season we are competing in Reefscape, sponsored by Haas; using engineering skills to strengthen one of the ocean’s most diverse habitats in this new challenge - protecting the coral and removing the algae.

During the season we will need very specific items for our robot, including the new Limelight camera system. This system will help our students identify the game pieces, our location on the field, and use AI and machine learning to traverse the field, picking up game pieces, and scoring them. Our students will be designing the robot using Solidworks, a CAD (computer aided design) software program. They will use these drawing to fabricate the robot from the aluminum stock we are requesting. We will be using our mills and CNC to make these parts and we need some additional fixtures, drill bits, and tooling. Finally, we received a Bamboo 3D printer from DonorsChoose last year and we need PLA and Carbon Fiber filament to create parts for our robot.

This program helps inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers. 100% of our alumni go to college, trade school, or the military after high school. My students have earned over 5 million dollars in scholarships and are working for Fortune 500 companies and engineering firms throughout the country. Thank you so much for sponsoring our team and for helping us to build our Mechanical Mustang - SeaBiscuit, named for the Triple Crown winning thoroughbred, and our mascot this season - a mechanical seahorse.
