My Students

Step into my classroom and you will find a diverse group of students, engaged in their own way, at their own pace and ability, in the task at hand. You may see two or three sets of students clustered around the paraprofessionals, chatting and completing their math work. You may see students working independently or in pairs in the library nook on the floor, spread out and lying down. You may see two or three students working with me on the SMART Board. We are engaged and we are flexible.

I am a teacher of students with disabilities in a low-income/high poverty district.

My students come from immigrant families, foster families, and a variety of family structures. I work to give them positive reinforcement and as much love as they need. I cannot control what goes on outside of my classroom, but my classroom is a space where they can be who they need to be and learn how they need to learn.

My Project

My students range from kindergarten to 3rd grade in their reading abilities. Many of my students have accommodations of text read to increase their comprehension and access to higher level texts. There are not sufficient resources in my classroom to support these readers with audio books and guided reading leveled texts.

My students love reading and they dedicate their time and efforts to becoming stronger readers.

My classroom needs a richer classroom library to support each student on their reading and comprehension level.

I have selected the following resources to grow my classroom library. Lower leveled readers and reading for fluency packs will help me and my classroom paraprofessionals work with each student on their phonological awareness, fluency, and decoding skills. Leveled audio books, portable CD players, and headphones will allow my students more independence and self-advocacy as they will be able to select their own desired book and listen. Audiobooks will allow my lower level readers to access the same content as their peers. We will all be stronger readers!
