Building Our Garden

Help me give my students a garden that they can be proud of and growth healthy herbs and vegetables to eat. The site for our garden was once a factory we need to ensure we have healthy soil.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are a school that caters to new arrivals. All my students are learning English and many have interrupted education. Our goal is to have a our students speaking, writing and reading in English by the time they graduate. My students love to dance and sing and have put on wonderful plays for the last few years in our school.

This year for the first time ever we are offering Horticulture.

My students are pretty excited about it and so am I! Having hands on projects and activities allows them to become motivated in learning. We are changing the outer perimeter of our field into a garden. At the current moment it is just over grown with weeds. Since it is our first time offering this course we are starting from the bottom up. My seniors want this garden to be their gift to future students, the community and the entire building. Currently our building houses 3 other high schools all of which use the field. We also have an open campus so the community uses it to run, play and relax. It would be wonderful if the place where my students spend most of their time looks wonderful.

My Project

These materials will help us ensure that the soil used for the edible plants we are placing into our raised bed is safe. Our school was built on the site where there was a factory. I want to make sure that we follow the proper procedure so that nothing is contaminated. The garden soil will make sure that what we are planting will be healthy and also good quality so that it can be used again and again in years to come.

Our goal is to teach students that they can make healthy decisions.

Growing vegetables and fruits will teach them healthy eating can be something that is part of every day and that a quick fix (potato chips) and other unhealthy options should not be their first go to when selecting things to eat.
