My Project

This semester, my gifted and talented students have finally been able to meet together and collaborate on STEM activities. They have learned the importance of planning, trying, reflecting, and trying again, and they have used those skills to complete tasks such as building towers out of spaghetti and marshmallows and building bridges with index cards. They have also completed problem solving activities with gummy worms and gummy life savers. All these activities have helped them start developing the problem-solving skills and communication skills that have been stunted because of COVID-19.

In the beginning of the semester, students wanted to complete projects by themselves, but I see them becoming a community of learners not just individuals.

COVID-19 has shown my students how important it is to reach out to others and stay in touch. At the same time, the pandemic has emphasized how hard that can be to do. Between quarantines and virtual days, it is hard to focus on any type of learning beyond the basics. Too often we have had to rely on worksheets and review projects we can do at home. This has been particularly true for gifted and talented students because opportunities to work together and try accelerated activities have been reduced.

My students want to try more advanced activities, but they are limited by what I can afford to purchase. The Knex, Magna-Tiles, and Lego sets I have requested will let them explore simple machines as well as gadgets and gears. The STEM kits will allow us to build 3D puzzles and toys and learn how they work.
