Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach a self-contained, special education class. In my classroom, there are 1st, 2nd, and 3rd graders. Most of my students live in shelters and public housing developments nearby. They have high levels of anxiety due to the uncertainties that they are facing outside of school. Many students come in hungry, tired, and worried. These children are facing so many obstacles that most of us could not imagine. My goal is to minimize these obstacles as much as I can.

In my classroom, we are a home away from home.

My goal is to develop this room into a safe and comforting environment where students can put their worries away for a while and focus on learning. My students are all on various academic levels due to their disabilities and recent hardships but they still show up to school and try their best. They remain kind, respectful, and ready to learn regardless of what life has thrown their way. Each child in my classroom has their own unique ways of learning that work best for them. In order to provide the proper support for my students, there are much more materials and supplies that are needed.

My Project

Most of my students began the year with little to no supplies. Many of them could not complete their homework because they did not have supplies at home. These materials will help my students learn and succeed in the classroom.

With this funding, I hope to create the classroom that they deserve and provide the supplies and environment that my students need in order to succeed.

My students need a variety of different tools to accommodate their disabilities and unique needs.

These materials will also help build a warm, calming environment for my students. The teepee will be used as a "calming corner" for my students that are working on their calming skills and expressing their emotions in appropriate ways.
