Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

While our classroom has a large selection of books, the majority are hand-me-downs from previous classes throughout the building all squeezed into one. This project gives us the opportunity to play a part in building the library based on CURRENT wants and needs. Our students are part of a special education Inclusion class, which means they attend General Education classes and special education resource rooms. Though exposure to a GenEd setting is important, the work can sometimes be overwhelming for alternate assessment students with disabilities.

The most important part of this project is selecting adapted books that my special education students can use to better understand the work going on in their General Education classes.

Students made a request of graphic novels and thankfully the selection includes many novels and plays the students have been assigned in the past. When they were asked what books they want for the classroom they were surprised to even be asked, and even more shocked when they saw me actually add the books into the cart.

These books are going to go a long way in not only giving the students a voice in some of the purchases being made for their classroom, but in overall literacy development. Books based on student interests will increase an interest in reading.
