Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are a blank slate. In TK, I get many students that have never been to school before. It's my job to show them that school is awesome, learning is fun, and sitting at your desk all day is not what we do! We cover a lot of academics, along with social and emotional learning each day.

My school believes in "Kindergarten to College," which is a huge motivator for our families, most of whom live near the poverty line.

It is my privilege to begin their journey to success with hands-on learning and interactive lessons.

My Project

As a teacher at a TK-12 school, I am lucky enough to meet and collaborate with middle and high school teachers. The benefits of being able to work with my students' future teachers are incredible. I get to hear directly from the source what is needed to be successful when they get older. Often, when working with the math department, their concerns are that some students do not have the number sense needed to understand the coursework and standards that are required of them.

Instilling a solid number sense foundation in TK allows my students to be successful throughout their educational journey.

Using lacing beads, students can simultaneously work on their one-to-one correspondence and fine motor skills. Dominoes are used to compare more and less as well as practice subitizing. Using a balance to show weight is more meaningful than just telling them that something is heavy or light. Being able to hold a solid shape and name its properties is much more likely to make an impact than just looking at a picture of a solid shape.

These supplies will enrich the math curriculum I am working with by providing my students with concrete examples of abstract ideas. This solid foundation will lead to a love of math and make learning concepts in middle and high school that much easier.
