We are a school focused on student learning. We work to push students to reach their potential and find their passions both in and out of school. We are a Title I, community school. Sixty-four percent belong to a minority group, 35% speak English as a second language, 14% receive special education services, and 90% participate in the free and reduced lunch program. We have high expectations for students’ academic performance and try to help them grow as individuals as well.
We do a lot of STEM activities and inquiry-based learning.
Most students come from broken homes or homes with no English speaking parents. Many of my kids are raising themselves as their parents work multiple jobs or are in jail. My students need to be taught how to read and write, but also basic life skills that will allow them to be successful in today’s world.
My Project
This year I'm implementing a behavior plan that awards money to kids when they are making good choices in the classroom. The focus is also to help them learn the value and the concept of counting coins.
The students will earn pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters for being on task, working hard, respecting adults and their classmates, and helping each other.
The items in this project will be available for them to purchase when we open our class store. Each week we will spend time counting our money and decide whether they are going to save for bigger prizes next week or spend their money on littler prizes this week.
I asked the students what kinds of things would motivate them to earn money and the most popular responses were snacks, slime, squishies, and fidget toys. In addition to saving their money for tangible prizes they can also save their money for things like- extra recess, extra iPad time, PJ day, reading with a buddy, and using the teacher chair for a day! My students were very excited about the opportunity to earn money and are so motivated to try and do their best and fill their "banks"! Please help keep this motivation alive!
