Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I watch many of my students with Autism struggle to develop their social skills because the third grade curriculum is more academic than social. What better way to develop academic and social skills than by building a village with your classmate and writing about it?

The only way to describe my students is by saying they are resilient.

Many of them were born with physical handicaps such as shortened limbs, disformed legs, or even spina bifida. Some spend their days in wheelchairs. They have learning difficulties. They all attend their local public school and they work harder than any other children I know. A majority of them are living below the poverty level and come from homes where there is usually only one guardian, which is not always a biological parent. They are a reminder that it's the climb that matters, not the results.

My Project

The students in my class have taken a strong liking to Lego readers. They are amazed at what can be built with blocks. The pictures in the book tend to spark the deepest discussions among my students, even the students who have been diagnosed with Autism. I often wonder, "If a picture can spark a thousand words, imagine what playing Legos can spark." I envision my students working together to build castles and villages and then writing detailed stories around these settings. Part of the 3rd grade Common Core curriculum is a unit that studies Ancient Greece and Rome. Think of how great it would be for the students to create replicas of the Parthenon or the Pantheon. I envision even the quietest child developing social skills that can be brought out to the playground at recess. With this project, my students will grow socially and academically.

The modern classroom is no longer sparked by child's play.

Rather, it is lit with words such as "test prep" and "common core". Imagine what creativity would be sparked by simple child's play. Imagine the growth in social skills for a child with Autism when they can engage in playing with Legos. Although the impact of this donation may not show directly through state test scores, please know that the impact will show growth for the children, whether it be academically or socially.
