Early literacy is such an important foundational skill for children, and the ability to recognize letters and numbers is a crucial skill taught in Kindergarten. My students would benefit greatly from the incorporation of these fine motor activities to add to our daily center rotations. Studies have shown that giving students a tactile way to practice their literacy skills will greatly improve their retention. By using ink stamps, playdough mats, and playdough stamps the students can practice their letters and build those fine motor skills needed to hold a pencil.
These tools give my students the ability to strengthen the muscles in their hands, crucial for holding a pencil and writing, at the same time that they are practicing letter recognition, and other phonics skills.
My students will love being able to gets hands on while learning their letters and numbers and strengthening their hand muscles along the way. The playdough and ink stamps can even help my students who already know their letters by having them begin to sound out and spell words, providing enrichment for all students.
