Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a Special Education teacher in a low-income, high poverty area in Homestead, Florida. I teach students with Emotional Behavior Disorders and Learning Disabilities. It is a Title I school which means that almost all of the students in the school receive free or reduced-price lunch. I am currently teaching math, science, language arts, reading, social studies, and social/emotional skills to a wonderful group of six and seven year olds. Most of these children come from difficult home environments and lack exposure to things that we can sometimes take for granted. My students are hard-working and eager to learn. They are also so grateful for new opportunities and excited for fun learning experiences. My special needs students are in great need of materials to work with when they have completed their work and district mandated computer program. I would like to use these materials as an incentive for completing their work.

My Project

My ESE students love playing with blocks as a reward for completing their work. Right now, all we have is some connecting cubes. I would love to provide a better variety of items they can work with. My students have emotional behavior disorders and providing these blocks and LEGO bricks may inspire them to complete their work. It also may help them with their communication skills as they would need to work together.

A simple tried and true pastime goes a long way toward expanding young minds.

The Legos, Bristle Blocks, and Design Builders are not only ways to inspire them to complete their work, it will also allow the children to learn through play. While playing with the blocks, children use their imaginations to design and build their projects while getting hands-on experience with measuring, counting, organizing and problem solving. blocks. In addition, my ESE students will develop motor skills and hand-eye coordination which is a huge necessity in my class. Most importantly, it can also help foster creativity, enhance problem-solving ability and build other cognitive, emotional and social skills which students with emotional behavior disorders desperately need.
