Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I am incredibly proud of our 3rd-grade students—they are curious, motivated, and eager to learn. A few weeks ago, we piloted a digital version of Scholastic News, and the feedback from our entire 3rd grade was overwhelmingly positive. After conducting an exit survey, we found that 83.33% of students said the magazine made reading more fun. Additionally, 81.48% of students expressed interest in having physical copies in class, which will further enhance their reading experience. As a Title 1 school, many of our students come from low-income households, and providing resources like these magazines is crucial to leveling the playing field and ensuring equal access to quality educational materials.

Providing physical copies of Scholastic News for every 3rd-grade student will spark their love for reading and connect them to real-world events through engaging, age-appropriate articles.

These magazines not only align with California’s content standards but also support critical areas like STEM and current events, ensuring students stay informed on important topics. In a time when misinformation is easily spread online, Scholastic News provides a trusted and reliable source that helps students develop critical thinking skills and stay properly informed. Additionally, the inclusion of STEM content is particularly important for encouraging girls to explore science and technology, fostering their interest in these vital fields.

These magazines will address a key need for more informational texts in the classroom. Recent MAP testing data shows that 98.7% of students can benefit from more exposure to non-fiction reading, which is crucial for improving comprehension and literacy skills. By incorporating Scholastic News into our curriculum, we provide students with relevant, high-quality content that will not only make learning fun but also help them achieve academic success.
