My Students

My students are part of the Academics, Career, and Essential Skills Program (ACES) program. ACES is part of the New York State Alternate Assessment. These amazing students are a low functioning group in the larger special education population in our school. Although they are in high school, many students have reading and math skills on a first-grade level. They are a part of a work study program as well.

In the ACES program, students develop functional life skills and academics in one place, helping them to develop and practice career-oriented skills for life after they leave our program.

As a Math, Transition and Work Study teacher, it is my job to bring them a traditional high school curriculum in a way that they can understand. Most of their time in the classroom involves hands-on learning which they love (especially in math)! This way of learning helps them to gain a better sense of life after they leave our program.

My Project

My students' varying learning styles are best met with hands-on activities.

Especially in building their independence with math, there's no better way to do so with manipulatives and opportunities to practice real-world scenarios.

These skills will transfer to our work-study activities as well.

With these materials, we can practice skills regarding time, money, shapes, and measurement. These skills are relevant outside of our classroom and will help my student become independent young adults.

I hope that I am able to teach my student math skills that they will be able to use for life, but more importantly the confidence to know they can!
