My Students

"Every child is an artist"- Pablo Picasso.

My students are energenic, smart, brave, and caring individuals who also happen to love the arts.

I am lucky to be teaching such bright and talented students and to be able to share my love and passion for art (and teaching) with them!

My students range from 5 years old to 13. They sing and dance and act and of course create visual art. There is no lack of creativity in our school which I believe helps the students thrive in all areas of academics. We are a Title I school meaning a large percent of kids are financially disadvantaged. There is an awesome sense of pride and community that I haven't seen before in a school. The children are caring and there are very positive signs of future leaders in society. Since we are an art school, the children choose their choice in artistic focus by 4th grade and develop their skill until 7th grade. The school is very unique in the way it structures student learning around the arts.

My Project

I am trying to broaden the horizons in our current, very 2 dimentional art classes. Some students love a pencil or paintbrush and will stick to those mediums if not pushed otherwise, and I am ready to challenge these children and take their creations to a new level! In 4th and 5th grade we will be creating aboriginal animal sculptures using the foam. We will use the tools in order to cut the foam to desired shapes.

We need the tools to be able to build and carve and mold the clay into our very own creations.

Students in all levels will be creating with clay this year. We will be hand building with our clay so having many tools to perfect our desired look will be important.

Students thrive when challenged in the art room. When the students learn that we will be building and making something that will be viewed from all angles it will make them think differently about their work, it will challenge them in new ways, it will use other parts of their brains and bodies in order to build their creations. Students will benefit from these new experiences in the fact that it will be something brand new to them. The unknown is always scary at first but once the children learn and develop skill in the sculpting area I believe they are developing a stronger will to learn and try new things. Projects like these help to develop self confidance and bring light to young artists who had no idea that their forte is in sculpture.
