My Project

In order to learn how to become better readers, thinkers, and financially educated members of our society, my 12th grade students need a class set of Luke Villermin's "A Teenager's Guide to Investing in the Stock Market," to better understand the complex world of stock market investing.

Using these materials, students will learn about the basics of stocks, compounding interest, opportunity cost, and long term wealth building strategies in order to invest in themselves and their families for the long term.

My students attend a low-income urban school in Philadelphia and hail from a variety of backgrounds, many of whom will be the first in their families to face the challenges of attending high school, college, and beyond. This book is designed to get students excited about reading and thinking about their financial lives with a long term focus, so that they can have multiple conversations about how to best build wealth for themselves, their families, and their communities.

Long-term social change is enacted not by catchy political slogans or through committed educators, but through our youth engaging in school, reading cool books, and building a compassionate learning community.
