My Students

Nestled between the bay area and wine county, my school has a small-town community feel! I teach math to all levels of 7th-grade students from those that are still struggling with fractions and integers to advanced students ready to look at challenging topics like the Pythagorean Theorem and operations with scientific notation and everyone in between.

Although they've spent over a year on distance learning, we are back in the classroom again and my students have amazed me with their flexibility, great attitudes, and willingness to persevere.

What a great group of students! There have definitely been challenges, but it's great to see them using reasoning and problem-solving.

My Project

After a year of learning math over Zoom, students need a variety of experiences to really build their number sense and numeracy skills more than ever before. This project will allow me to purchase several resources I can use in my classroom to make the junior high math experience more meaningful and engaging for my students. The number sense starter set of tasks could be used at the beginning of every math class to help students think more flexibly with numbers and gain understanding. Students with a solid number sense are more likely to see the connections in mathematics and have a greater understanding. For example, someone with a strong number sense can recognize that if an $18 shirt is on sale for 40% off, the sale price can't be $7.20 because that's less than 50%. I'd also like to purchase some math group work challenge activities and escape rooms to get students back to working together after a year of being isolated at home. These activities give students a reason to work together and build socialization and teamwork skills that are so important.

My neediest students who are two or more years behind grade level need a comprehensive curriculum that's targeted to their needs to fill in gaps and help get them prepared for high school.

This will allow me to purchase a great invention program that can be used in my support class. It includes hands-on activities designed to help students recognize and correct misconceptions and fun digital resources to engage them in meaningful practice. All of these resources will be able to be used year after year to help many students become mathematicians!
