Our school is different. We are a 5-8 campus in a small town. The coolest thing about our school is that we are a public service school. One Saturday a month, all of the teachers work with a portion of the student body on a community-based project. We have prepped materials for shoes in third world countries, cleaned streets in the community, made snuggle blankets for patients at the children's hospital, and put together care packages for soldiers.
My students are becoming readers!
The first ten minutes of every class period is reading time, and I am proud to say that every single one of my students is reading! My students are all over the place when it comes to reading levels, but being able to read whatever they want to eases the pressure. Many of my reluctant readers have even said that they are starting to enjoy reading. On the few days where the bell ringer must be something else, it makes me proud that they complain about not being able to read.
My Project
Last year our school used a program that tested students about the books they had read and awarded points based on their scores. While it worked for some, many kids hated it. This year I have students begin the class with a ten minute read. Practically every single student loves it! So much so that when they don’t get their reading time, they complain.
Voracious reading appetites must be fed!
While I have a pretty good classroom library, I want to keep providing my students with new intriguing titles. My kids are reading more now than ever before, and I want to keep them on that track. I am so excited that they are reading and enjoying it! I think the books I’ve chosen will meet that goal.
