My Students

My fourth grade students come to me knowing very little about technology and how to use it but very eager to learn. My goal for them at the end of the year is to be as proficient and confident with computers as they are with the fourth grade content.

According to a recent study, sixty percent of the jobs that will be available when my students graduate from high school have not yet been invented.

They are jobs in the field of technology. My students come from homes where access to the Internet is very limited. Most do not have access to home computers, tablets, smart phones or other devices. Science and technology are becoming increasingly important and my students' future success depends largely on whether or not they have the ability to adapt to changing technological advances. I teach in a low income, high poverty area. For many of my students, my classroom is the only opportunity they will have to experience and interact with these devices

My Project

I would like to sponsor an after school LEGO Robotics club. Having sponsored a similar club in a different district I have seen first hand the valuable skills children learn from designing, building, and programming their LEGO robots. Students will have to learn to work cooperatively and collaboratively. This is a great opportunity for many students to step into a leadership role who have not been confident enough to do so in the past. Students will have to learn to divide tasks and persevere when the building of their robots gets difficult. Often, the students drawn to LEGO robotics are the ones who would not ordinarily participate in an after school club. I will be giving these students a safe and healthy alternative to having nothing productive to do. My students need one LEGO Mindstorms EV3 kit to encourage engineering and technology in the classroom.

Technology is ever changing.

We can do things now that seemed impossible just a few years ago. The older students are before being introduced to technology the more difficult it will be for them to learn even the basics. My LEGO robotics club will instill in my students confidence, perseverance, leadership skills, cooperation, and most importantly, the curiosity and drive to learn how and why things work the way they do. These skills are essential to students' future success.
