This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The school year is well underway, and we are gearing up for our holiday break. My 24 students have already grown and changed so much since the beginning of the year- new haircuts, missing teeth, new backpacks/clothes, and more. My students are starting to gain confidence as readers, equipped with a variety of strategies to help them solve tricky words. As their fluency picks up, we are ready to dive deeper into reading comprehension and study the characters in our books.

My Project

I am gearing up for a reading unit, during which time I will introduce character feelings and traits. During this time, students' vocabulary expands drastically as they pick up words such as jealousy, frustration, excitement, curiosity, and more. In order to teach this unit well, it is helpful to study characters that are part of a book series. As a result, I am requesting book series such as "Pedro," "Katie Woo," "Fly Guy," "Kazam," "Morris the Moose," "Tabby Cat," and more. These series also span across multiple reading levels, so that all students have access to "just right" books through which they can study the characters in their books. During this unit we will study character's actions across time, notice trends in feelings/behavior (i.e. enduring traits), and note how the characters' feelings change over time.

By studying characters from popular book series, students also learn how to identify their own feelings.

Students start solving their own conflicts on the playground and implement their own self-soothing strategies. This unit is by far my favorite, as it totally transforms my classroom culture.
