Building Empathy and Enthusiasm through Books in Spanish #2

My students need books in Spanish to improve their vocabulary and comprehension, but more importantly to expand their knowledge and understanding of other cultures. By teaching students about culture, we can promote empathy and acceptance.

My Students

My students are a diverse group of learners in New York City who come from a variety of cultural and linguistic backgrounds.

My students are driven to succeed, but our funding has been cut, many come from economically disadvantaged families, fifteen percent have learning disabilities, and class sizes are large.

Regardless, of these challenges 99% of our students graduate in four years and 90% enter college within 18 months or graduation. We work hard to provide our students with a rigorous education that will prepare them for life after high school!

Our school is in an office building that is lacking many of the amenities of most high schools. I believe our students deserve to learn in an environment that is warm and inviting and has the necessary resources to help them thrive!

My Project

I teach Spanish 2, 3, and 4 to 9th, 10th, and 11th grade students who are passionate about learning Spanish and understand the benefits of learning a second language. This year, I have 30 students in my 9th grade Spanish 2 Class. Some of them have been studying Spanish for one year. Others have never formally studied Spanish, but speak Spanish at home. For this reason, the students have varying levels of proficiency and very different needs.

These books will help my students learn about Hispanic culture, improve their language skills, and get them excited about learning Spanish!

This project is the second part to a previously funded project. Thanks to your generous donations, I have started a library of books in Spanish! I want to give my students access to engaging reading materials that will show them that learning another language can be fun! Most of the books in this project are children's books that will support learning through bilingual text and compelling images!

Students have already started looking at the books that I currently have and some have asked if they could take them home to read. Some students who had me last year, but were unable to take Spanish this year due to scheduling conflicts have also asked if they could borrow books in Spanish! I know that my students will be ecstatic to see all these new choices!
