Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are a part of the Mexican-American community of East Los Angeles. They demonstrate determination and resilience, from the many hardships that come with living in low-income neighborhoods.

They are curious, creative, and yearning for more knowledge.

Our school prides itself in preparing our students to be college-ready, and these students always give their all when they are given the opportunities to be more successful in their future. They understand that knowledge and skills in mathematics and science opens the door to many opportunities in the world. As a math teacher, I wish to provide them a variety of opportunities that will encourage them to pursue their interests in STEAM-related fields.

My Project

In my Robotics enrichment class, my 6th grade students will use LEGO MINDSTORMS EV3 as an introduction to computer science, programming, and robotics. Not only do they get the opportunity to be creative with designing their robots; they also explore programming using the MINDSTORMS software. They learn the basics of programming that are used in any other programming language such as loops, switches, and nests - all while tackling fun challenges that command their robots to do specific tasks.

My students get to apply 21st-century skills needed to be successful in any STEAM field.

The demand for skills in computer science is increasing in the job market. Skills in collaboration is a necessity in any job. In my classroom, my students must work together as a team - they decide amongst each other whether they will be in charge of designing the robot, building the program from the computer, or obtaining resources and ideas from other classmates. Like any other mathematician, scientist, or engineer, they learn to persevere through challenging tasks - and enjoy the rewards for completing those challenges. With sufficient materials, all of this will be possible for my students to do!
