This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My bilingual third graders come from diverse backgrounds and face many challenges, including limited resources at home. Many of their families do not have the time, resources, or understanding of how beneficial playing board games can be for their child’s development. My students are eager learners who thrive when given opportunities to think critically, collaborate, and engage in hands-on learning experiences.

My Project

Playing board games is an incredible way to build critical thinking skills, improve problem-solving abilities, and strengthen social interactions. Games teach students important skills like strategy, patience, turn-taking, and teamwork. They also provide a fun and engaging way to reinforce math, literacy, and reasoning skills without feeling like traditional schoolwork.

In our classroom, we use games to foster a sense of community. I try to play with my students monthly to introduce new games, and once they learn, they teach their classmates. Unfortunately, I do not have enough of one game for all students to play at the same time, and I would love to add more options to our collection.

Additionally, my students love working on jigsaw puzzles. Right now, they are working on a 400-piece puzzle, and I would love to provide more before the end of the school year. I allow them to take mental work breaks at our puzzle table, which helps them refocus and practice perseverance.

By adding more board games and puzzles to our classroom, my students will:

Strengthen critical thinking and problem-solving skills

Improve communication and teamwork

Develop patience, perseverance, and strategic thinking

Build friendships and classroom community in a positive, engaging way
