Building Connections, One Snack at a Time: Konawaena Project

My Project

My role as a School-Based Behavioral Health Counselor at the middle school exposes me to the diverse realities of our students, many of whom experience varying levels of socio-economic stability and access to support. The prolonged impact of COVID-19 has exacerbated these challenges, leading to a noticeable increase in students arriving at school without having had breakfast or lunch. Consequently, hunger is a pervasive issue that significantly hinders their ability to focus and learn. In adolescence, proper nutrition is vital for both physical and cognitive development. Recognizing this critical link, I have for the past seven years personally provided snacks to hungry students, along with other essential items. This initiative not only addresses an immediate physical need but also serves as a crucial first step in supporting their overall well-being. By ensuring students are not preoccupied by hunger, we create a foundation for them to engage with their education and feel more secure. Furthermore, offering a simple snack can open doors for connection, allowing students to feel safe enough to discuss their mental health and other concerns. This project seeks funding to formalize and sustain this vital snack provision, enabling me to continue removing a significant barrier to learning and well-being for the students of Konawaena.
