Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

James Joyce wrote, "Poetry, even when apparently most fantastic, is always a revolt against artifice, a revolt, in a sense, against actuality." My students need inlets and outlets to fall in love with language. The best way to guide them is by empowering them through art, specifically poetry.

I am new to the school and the city of New Haven, but what I know is that my students are like a family.

They are kind, respectful and hardworking. They meet my expectations and are loyal to being good human beings. They are critical thinkers and writers when given opportunities; they are active listeners and learners. Overall, they are amazing beings with so much potential, and they only need to be given opportunities to shine. They come from disadvantaged backgrounds, but that is not all they are. They are resilient. They have chosen to be scholars despite any odds. They are confident. They are creators and our new generation.

My Project

My students will create vocabulary banks with the cards, games and books we receive. I will be sure to create fun lessons that will allow them to create meaningful poetry with the new vocabulary they acquire. Because April is National Poetry Month, I would like them to create their own books, and large scale posters to put up in the school. I envision them attempting to use new words, being creative, and expressing themselves while learning. It doesn't stop there. With the podium, they will able to present their original works while practicing their public speaking skills. I know that they will be shy at first, but a podium will make them feel like actual professional poetry performers! They will receive necessary skills to be in High School next year. These include grade level vocabulary acquisition, writing and analysis skills, and lastly oratory experience. If we provide the tools, they will use them.

Aside from gaining essential academic skills and experience, they will be engaged.

Imagine walking away from Middle School with your own creation... a book of poetry? This is better than a yearbook! This will stay with them for the rest of their life. The experience will be unforgettable, and I know that your donation will touch their lives for years to come.
