My Project

The ability to read fluently and with understanding is developed with a solid foundation in decoding skills. These skills need to be taught in an "explicit, systematic, and sequential" order. My students need extra practice in developing their reading skills. Most students are excited to transfer into chapter books because it makes them feel big. Chapter books are usually too difficult for my students, but Dog on a Log chapter books has a gradual progression of phonics that builds confidence in struggling readers.

These decodable readers will allow the students to apply their knowledge of explicitly taught phonics skills in a systematic progression increasing their ability to move toward fluent independent reading.

The items being requested will help create the background needed to become a fluent reader. The books that will be purchased will offer opportunities for my students to read "chapter books" just like fluent readers. My goal is for every child to become a confident and fluent reader that is capable of reading any chapter book.
