Building Confidence and Practical Skills With STEAM in the Kitchen

Help me give my students small kitchen appliances to help teach special need students how to cook while reinforcing STEAM skills.

My Project

In my advanced classes, students are excited to collaborate and design food lab lesson plans focused on introducing special needs students to cooking. These labs will be tailored to teach practical, easy-to-follow cooking and baking skills, building students’ confidence and highlighting the science behind each recipe.

To make this project a success, we are seeking your support to obtain essential small kitchen appliances like toasters, immersion blenders, salad spinners, and other items that will help make cooking accessible and enjoyable for our life skills students.

This blender, toaster ovens, and other appliances will allow my high school students to teach life skills students healthy and beginner-friendly recipes, with a hands-on approach to food science.

In each lab, our advanced students will model every step of the recipe, explaining the "how" and "why" behind cooking techniques, which ties into STEAM learning by helping students understand concepts like heat transfer, emulsification, and food safety. This hands-on, STEAM-integrated approach ensures that every student, regardless of ability, actively participates and learns.

This project not only supports our life skills students, but, also deeply benefits my advanced students. Teaching these labs provides them with experience in adapting lesson plans, communicating effectively, and building empathy—skills valuable for future careers in fields like education, child development, and healthcare.

Your support for this project will empower life skills students to gain independence in the kitchen and inspire my advanced students to become compassionate, skilled caregivers and educators. Together, we can give all students a chance to explore the joys and science of cooking.
