My Students

Our school is an urban high school in Los Angeles serving 1,300 students through our comprehensive program and our VAPA and STEM-Multimedia Magnets. A Title I school, almost 75% of our students qualify for free or reduced-price lunches. Our students come from diverse backgrounds and have diverse talents and learning styles. About 70% of our students are classified as Long Term English language learners, thus many struggle to keep up with today's complex literacy demands. Additionally, we serve about 100 students with Individualized Educational Plans (IEPs) and about 100 students classified as Gifted And Talented (GATE).

While students are increasingly bombarded with multimedia, they sometimes forget that there are creators behind all these messages and that they are creators as well as consumers of media.

By bringing in writers in different genres, our school's library is able to help students make connections between the texts they encounter and the intentions behind them.

As the writers share their experiences writing and publishing, students are challenged to see themselves as active participants in media and culture. We are lucky to live in a literary-rich city with prominent writers who are available to come speak to all our students.

My Project

Our Literature Club is trying to receive funding for our next book to read in our book club. Here is how the book club members describe the project:

"This year we wanted to focus on analyzing and comparing protagonists’ choices, actions, and characteristics across different types of fiction.

To do so, we are exploring different types of novels. We have already read one realistic novel and one romance novel. It is time for a fantasy novel! We have chosen the new best seller The Cruel Prince by Holly Black for this genre. We hope that in reading this novel, we can deepen our critical thinking skills in comparing genres across fiction."

Students will lead the club into discussions about The Cruel Prince during the weekly club meeting. It allows allows students from different grades and with different perspectives to come together over a shared love of reading. Literature club allows students to make new friends and expand reading selections. It is heartwarming to see other new members make friends, and have the opportunity become a mentor to our younger members.
