Building Community Through Outdoor Play

Help me give my students a fun opportunity to continue their learning outside. These items will help them engage in play that encourages teamwork and taking turns as they develop gross motor skills.

My Project

I love to bring learning outside for our kiddos. This gives every child an opportunity to be in nature and move their bodies in new and experimental ways. Outdoor play provides time for children to learn how to interact with their peers, problem solve and build strong bodies and minds.

Children who grow and develop strong motor skills also develop confidence and an ability to trust their bodies.

As children work together to build the balance beam and place the stepping stones, they will develop problem solving and communication skills. Balancing builds core muscles which helps them have more control over their bodies.

Throwing and catching helps children learn to pay attention to the task at hand. It also builds hand eye coordination and observation skills as they look to where they are throwing the ball and follow it in as they catch it. Having different size balls to catch and throw helps with motor planning and strengthening the muscles in their hands and arms.

Using letters as bowling pins adds alphabetical knowledge as the kids roll the ball toward targeted letters or review which letters were knocked down. This game also builds hand eye coordination, concentration and perseverance.

These outdoor toys will help all of our students thrive. Throwing and catching, balancing their whole bodies, and rolling a ball, moves muscles repetitively which builds speed, agility and strength. Positive gross motor play builds a confidence in them that will carry over into the classroom.
