Building Classroom Community and Social-Emotional Learning

My Project
Jean Callison is an AVID Elementary School where we celebrate and prepare students for college and their future careers! In each class on campus, we adopt a college to represent. Our homeroom classroom represents San Francisco State University! Go, Golden Gators! I utilize this to help my students set goals, discuss college and career avenues, play games, build community, and foster Social-Emotional Learning. There is a strong sense of pride and community in each class on campus and I want to continue to facilitate that community pride in my classroom.
My goal is to be able to give each of my homeroom students "swag bags" at the beginning of the year with some fun school supplies like pens and pencils, alligator items, friendship bracelets, and other items to build relationships and a sense of belonging.
I want to make sure these students are taken care of and have school supplies they will need as well as some additional goodies to make their start of the year special and fun. Many of our students rely on the teachers and the school to provide the basic materials they need. We will use the stickers to decorate our Social-Emotional Learning journals the students use daily. I have found that providing friendship bracelets at the beginning of the year helps bond the students quickly, and almost all students continue to wear them throughout the entire year. I know my students will love these supplies to show their SFSU and classroom pride and will be thankful to have some of the school supplies they need to be successful.
