Bullying is affecting many children emotionally and physically. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, one-third of middle and high school students have experienced some kind of bullying. However, bullying needs to be addressed as soon as a child starts school.
I teach preschool to a wonderful group of 24 students in a high poverty school.
My students come to a safe heaven in our school but in their neighborhood they have to deal with gangs, poverty, and other social issues. Being aware of bullying and its consequences at an early age will help my students reduce bullying later.
My Project
With the book Bullying in Schools and the other character books, I will develop lessons to teach my students acceptance and tolerance of all children regardless of physical make-up. I want them to realize that people have more similarities than differences. Therefore, there is no reason to bully someone just because of their looks. In addition, I'm also requesting a taxi-trike that will not only enhance their large motor skills but will also help them get along. With a new trike they will have more opportunities to share, take turns, express themselves, negotiate, etc. Consequently, bullying in the playground will decrease as my students enjoy riding the trike and develop empathy toward their peers.
As my students begin to learn about bullying and its consequences, they will want to stop it in our school.
They will be able to stand up for themselves and they will become buddies. I'm hoping that if we get this project funded my students' social skills will flourish and they will learn to be respectful and kind with each other. Please donate and be part of my students' lifelong success.
