My Project

As a PBIS initiative, the Guidance Department at our school is creating calming corners for every classroom in the school. This includes our ELL, sub separate, and specials classrooms. Our goal is to build SEL skills in our PreK through Grade 2 students. We hope to build independence and confidence in our students to cope with frustration, to self-sooth when overwhelmed, and to learn strategies to manage feelings while recognizing that all feelings are ok.

We have begun our project and have already supplied the classrooms with fidgets, calming mazes, sensory water globes, and drawing supplies.

We are currently looking to build the sensory tools with noise cancelling headphones. The timers are anticipated to be used by students to limit their time away from the group and to build independence in self monitoring their feelings and ability to get back on track. By the end of the project, we hope to have bean bag chairs in every room, a set of supplies, and a book about calming corners for all rooms.

By providing instruction on how to use the calming comers and accessibility in every room, students will understand the function and purpose of the calming corners and have a resource for emotional needs wherever they are in the building.

Calming corners in classrooms keep students in the learning environment, support social/emotional needs, normalize feelings, destigmatizes big emotions, and provides tools for self regulation. Thank you for considering our project for funding.
